A Friend¹s House in McDonough will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday at 11 a.m., to celebrate its new Independent Transitional Suite. The facility will enable residents ages 17.5-21 to further prepare for independent living as they transition out of foster care.

A Friend¹s House is a shelter for abused, neglected and abandoned children. The new suite is part of a legacy project that was completed by the Leadership Henry Class of 2019, said the shelter¹s Executive Director, Sandra Gravely.

“We wanted to be able to create a space that would allow youth ages 17.5 to 21 to transition and continue to have supervised living,” said Gravely. “This space will provide opportunities to continue to work on skills toward independent living.”

The 1,200 square-foot suite, said Gravely, will include two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen and sitting area.

“It’s built like a college dormitory,” said Gravely, adding that the goal of the suite is to help residents at A Friend’s House to be “contributing members of society.”
