July 16 will mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. To commemorate the occasion, the library system’s space-themed program will enable children and adults to enjoy educational and entertaining activities throughout the summer.

A robotics demonstration, titled “Out of the Box: iROBOT” will showcase how robots are used in space exploration.  Attendees will watch and operate a robotic arm and learn how electronics, hydraulics, and solar energy are used to power the machine.  iRobot will take place at the following times and locations:

•June 26 at 11 a.m., at the Cochran Public Library, 174 Burke St., in Stockbridge for all ages

•June 26 at 3 p.m., at the McDonough Public Library, 1001 Florence McGarity Blvd, for teens and July 12 at 2:30 p.m., at the Fortson Public Library, 61 McDonough Street in Hampton, for teens

•July 18 at 3:30 p.m., at the Fairview Public Library, 28 Austin Road in Stockbridge, for children

•July 19 at 4 p.m., at the Locust Grove Public Library, 115 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., for teens.

The library system will also host trivia nights as part of the program. “Star Wars” trivia nights are scheduled for July 9 and 23, both at 6 p.m., at Rico’s Mexican Restaurant, 386 E. Atlanta Road in Stockbridge.

On June 27 from 5-7 p.m., the Fortson Library will host a Reading Rebels night.  Participants will have an opportunity to bowl for Stormtroopers,

search for the rebel plans in a scavenger hunt, and create crafts with a “Star Wars” theme. Books, comics and audiobooks from the movie franchise will also be available at local library branches or online.

The Universe of Stories Summer Reading Program will be available at library branches or online, for children from birth to fifth grade. Each child will receive a reading log with the goal of completing 20 books or logging 10 hours reading for June and July. Those with completed logs will receive a certificate and a prize.

Students from sixth to 12th grades will be able to get in on the Summer Reading Program by checking out items at local library branches.  Those who do so will receive a scratch-off ticket (some of which are instant winners) while others will be entered to win an iPAD grand prize (one per branch).   Adults can take part in the summer program as well, with activities including Zumba, crafts, and computer training classes.  For more information, visit  www.henrylibraries.org or the library system’s Facebook page.
