Two rezoning requests were heard by the McDonough City Council at its April 15 regular meeting, but no action was taken as both were tabled until next month.
The first petition included an annexation request, for 62.21 acres on Lake Dow Road and Rodgers Road, along with a rezoning to R-75 (single-family residential). There was considerable discussion regarding some of the proposed conditions on the 138-lot development, and some council members made it clear that they did not want to deviate from the Planning Commission’s recommendations regarding house size and other specifications.
A motion was made to deny the annexation, but before the vote was taken the applicant’s attorney asked that the matter be continued so he could confer with his client. The motion to annex was withdrawn and a separate motion to table the request until the May 2 meeting was approved unanimously.
At that point it was obvious that the rezoning would come to a vote that night, but the public hearing on the rezoning request was conducted since some local residents had come to the meeting for that reason. No one spoke in favor and three people spoke in opposition. After the public hearing was concluded, a vote was taken to table the rezoning request until the May 2 meeting. It was also unanimous.
The other rezoning item on the meeting agenda was for a commercial property, the Homewood Suites Hotel on Avalon Parkway. The owner seeks to consolidate two tracts of land and give the entire 3.6-acre site a C-3 (highway commercial) zoning with conditions.
A motion was made to table the matter until the May 2 meeting, and it passed with a 5-2 vote, as Mayor Billy Copeland and Councilman Benjamin Pruett were opposed.
In other business, the council approved a $14,900 contract with Mallett Consulting for a review of 23 buildings and sites across the city focusing on Americans with Disabilities Act regulations and a plan for compliance. Locations on the list include several parks, pedestrian areas around the square, city police and fire stations, areas around City Hall and other municipal buildings. The council also heard a presentation from the McDonough Housing Authority about its need to expand and increase senior housing, passing a motion to move forward with the development of a master plan concept study in that regard for review at the council’s May 2 meeting.
