It’s time, once again, to make your garden come alive with the colors and the tastes of spring.

The Henry County Master Gardeners’ annual Plant Sale is scheduled for April 27 from 9 a.m., to 2 p.m., in the Jason T. Harper Event Center at Heritage Park, 95 Lake Dow Road in McDonough. Among the hundreds of items which will be available during the event are house plants, vegetables, herbs, and shrubs.

Frank Hancock is the agriculture and natural resource agent for the University of Georgia Extension Office in McDonough. He said patrons at the sale will find a “wide variety” of plants for their gardens, and become more educated about gardening at the same time.

“These plants are all grown by the Master Gardeners,” said Hancock. “You will get to talk to the people that grew them, and you will be able to learn how to grow them and be successful.”

The Master Gardeners assist various projects at gardens in the area throughout the year. They also maintain three gardens at Heritage Park – Nolan House, the Community Garden and a Shade House Garden that stores geraniums for students in the local 4-H program.

The Plant Sale is one of the major fundraisers for the Master Gardeners each year, said Sue Kilgore, plant sale coordinator for the group. She said the sale typically generates a great deal of interest locally, and that the group brought in more than 1,200 plants from their gardens in Henry County for last year’s sale.

Kilgore said the event itself offers a $1,000 scholarship to help college students reach their educational goals.

“The scholarship program is for graduating Henry County seniors going into an agriculture-based degree program,” she said.

The Master Gardeners will have tables set up with information on topics such as pollinator plants and vegetable gardening. Kilgore added that the sale will also feature “gently-used” gardening equipment for attendees to purchase as well.

“It’s like a garden yard sale,” she said. “It could be garden art, planters, or old equipment.”   For more information, call 770-288-8421.
