Henry County As It Was

In an effort to preserve some of the history of our community, The Times is displaying photos of Henry County from the past. If you can tell us about the photo shown above, us using this form and tell us. In the next edition, we’ll reveal the details of the picture and notes readers send us.

Joyce Andrews wrote in to identify this photo of Mr. and Mrs. Zack Hinton. Jim Joyner called to identify this week’s photo as Zack and Laura Hinton at the door of Houston Joyner’s brother’s school bus. He drove for them in the late 40s and the early to mid 50s. Back in those days, the county did not own the buses, the citizens did and the county leased the buses from them. Laura Hinton wrote in to identify herself and her husband Zack. She added, “Lake Dow Road had just been paved. The developers (McGarity and Hinton) held a BBQ to drive people around the developed lots. There were no homes at that time. Zack and I were the tour guides on the school bus. This was in 1979 or 80.” Buddy Upchurch wrote, “this is my mama’s baby brother, Uncle Zack and his lovely wife, Aunt Laura Hinton. Entrepreneurs, business owners and pillars of the community.” Sherry Carmichael also correctly identified the photo.
