Henry School Board to extend Davis’ contract, consider new policies

All five members of the Henry County Board of Education are pleased with the performance of Superintendent Mary Elizabeth Davis so far, and they want to keep her around even longer.

The board took action at the end of its March 11 regular meeting to amend Davis’ contract according to terms discussed in executive session. Davis was not present for that discussion. In a separate motion, the board voted to authorize its attorneys to negotiate with Davis on the amended contract.

No details of any kind were given during the public meeting, although the word “extended” was used at least once by a board member in reference to the contract. An official also confirmed on the district’s Facebook page that the length of the contract is being extended.

Every board member commented publicly in a positive way about the job Davis has done, including her tireless work ethic and her passion for helping everyone in the district succeed. More than one board member called her “a breath of fresh air.”

In other business, three proposed new policies were announced for 30 days of public comment in hopes of being approved in April.

The first, titled “Henry’s Plan of Action,” is designed to implement the district’s “core beliefs and commitments for the purpose of creating and sustaining a high-performing school district that educates all children to high standards and prepares students to be healthy and active contributors to a global community.”

The second refers to instructional materials. It is a revision of a previous policy and is intended to provide clarity and distinction between the board’s policy for acquiring resources and the administrative regulations to establish the system by which they are acquired.

The third is about grading systems. It “implements and maintains a district system for grading that is consistent and designed to support the success of each student in a rigorous instructional program.”   Each of these has been posted on the district’s website until April 5 for review by citizens, who are also encouraged to provide feedback.
