The City of Stockbridge is honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Sr., affectionately known as Daddy King. Throughout the month of February the community can view an educational display at the Cochran Public Library in Stockbridge.
Martin Luther King Sr. was an American Baptist pastor, missionary and an early figure in the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. He was the father of civil rights leader and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. of Atlanta, Georgia. The Daddy King Display is a part of the Stockbridge Stories Series which is a collection of oral histories for the City of Stockbridge that are rooted in local culture and aim to encourage reflection, motivate participation and inspire further exploration.
“The Stockbridge Main Street Program is again partnering with the Cochran Library to honor hometown hero, Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., also known as Daddy King,” said Stockbridge Main Street Manager Kira Harris-Braggs. “It is our goal to ensure that Stockbridge residents, especially our youth, know about the great King legacy that exists here. Many did not know that King, Sr. was born and raised in Stockbridge; or that he was ordained as a minister and preached his first sermon here, at Floyd Chapel Baptist Church. Daddy King was a civil and human rights activist long before his son, Martin Luther King, Jr., was even born. It was Daddy King who, through his early activism, influenced King, Jr. to dedicate his life to the fight for social justice. Stockbridge is where the seeds for the great King Legacy were sowed. Our community can take great pride in that fact.” For more information on the City of Stockbridge, visit www.cityofstockbridge.com
