McDonough Mayor Billy Copeland, identified the photo and mentioned that the store was located on the South side of the McDonough Square where Ms. Morene’s is located today. Mark Parker, an unofficial history buff who is not a Henry County native, called to tell us the picture is of Gasses Department Store which was located in the present site of the Doll Store on the Square. Larry Allgood wrote, “Gasses Department Store was a clothing store on the Square. I remember Raymond, Victor, and Betty Gasses and their parents. These old stores had a unique smell of clothes in them. I miss the old McDonough and all of the stores I grew up with.” Cathy Dees said, “This is a picture of a department store on the McDonough Square owned by members of the Gasses family. The store offered relatively low prices compared to major department stores. I’m not sure how long the store was there but it was still in business in the early 80’s. I went to the same church, St. James Catholic Church, with the Gasses family when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s. Many of the family still live in Henry County.”
