Travis Bergen was selected recently in the Rule 5 Draft by the San Francisco Giants, claiming him from the Toronto Blue Jays, who drafted him in the seventh round of the regular draft in 2015. Before that he played collegiate baseball at Kennesaw State.

Bergen has spent the past three-plus seasons with various teams at the Rookie League, A and AA levels. In 2018 the 25-year-old lefthander appeared in 43 games with two different teams, compiling a 0.95 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings.

Each December, the Rule 5 Draft allows clubs without a full 40-man roster to select certain non-40-man-roster players from other clubs. They draft in reverse order of the standings from the previous season.

Players chosen in this draft must be assigned to the club’s 25-man roster and must be placed on outright waivers to be removed from the 25-man roster in the subsequent season. Should he clear waivers, he must be offered back to his previous team for $50,000 and can be outright to the minors only if his original club does not wish to reacquire him.
