Henry County Government and Connecting Henry are preparing to brighten the holiday season for area children, through the annual Community Cares Christmas Toy Shop.
The toy shop provides new, unwrapped toys and books to local children who might not otherwise have presents under the Christmas tree.
The endeavor initially began as a way to provide Christmas toys to needy children, said Henry County Communications Director Melissa Robinson. Over the years, the program came under the direction of Connecting Henry. Robinson said county employees collaborated with local churches and volunteers to provide toys and gifts to families with children up to 12 years of age.
“The families for the most part are referred to the program through the school system and Connecting Henry makes sure they qualify for assistance,” said Robinson. “The toy shop is set up so that parents or guardians can come in and shop for toys, rather than just receiving a bag of toys. This helps parents find toys that they know their children will enjoy and also gives them the dignity to make those decisions themselves.”
The festive toy shop features tables full of new toys, books, hats and gloves, as well as a room with additional stocking stuffers and wrapping paper. Parents also will have a place where they can relax and enjoy light refreshments.
The toy shop helps Connecting Henry’s staff to determine whether a family is in need of other resources. Robinson said volunteers at the toy shop work together to create “Christmas by the community, for the community.”
“What has made it such a success is all of the leadership, staff and volunteers from every segment of the community coming together for a great cause,” she said. “Henry County employees who volunteered at last year’s event did everything from setting up the toy shop to acting as personal shoppers and hosts. Volunteers spent hours creating a one-of-a-kind toy shop resulting in an enchanted experience.”
Last year, the toy shop helped to provide gifts for more than 900 children. Robinson said local residents, county employees, churches, and civic organizations contributed their time and money to make Christmas brighter for kids.
Suggested donations for young children include crayons and coloring books, Play-Doh, baby dolls, stuffed animals, character toys, learning toys, Hot Wheels, larger toy cars, puzzles, board games, play tools, and dress-up items, such as crowns and superhero gear.
Donations for pre-teens can include nail polish and make-up kits, PG and PG-13 DVDs, sports jerseys, skateboards, basketballs, footballs, jewelry and watches, scarves, jewelry-making kits, arts and crafts kits, and bath and body sets.
Gift cards and money are also being accepted as donations. Those items should be dropped off at Connecting Henry, 66 Veterans Drive in McDonough.
Gifts may also be dropped off at the Henry County Administration Building, 140 Henry Parkway, or at Connecting Henry during normal business hours until November 30.
