New Pre-K classes for schools

Special to The Times

After a successful rollout and introduction of three Pre-K classes for Henry County Schools in the 2016-2017 school year, the school system has been granted three additional classes by the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL).

The three schools gaining one class each will be Hampton Elementary Charter School, Pate’s Creek Elementary, and Tussahaw Elementary. These three schools join Fairview Elementary, Oakland Elementary, and Wesley Lakes Elementary in providing the free Pre-K classes to residents of the county.

Continuing this year, preference for the seats in each new class will be given to those students living in the respective school zones. If there are more requests than spaces available, a lottery system will be enacted. Families living outside of those school zones can still apply for a spot in one of the new classes but will only be considered if there are not enough registrations from families living within the school zone. Each class is capped at 22 students.

The school system will also provide transportation for students accepted into one of the classes so long as they reside in the school zone.

This will be the second year Henry County Schools is providing a full-day Pre-K program. There has been Pre-K for special needs children in recent years, but the school system is using Georgia Lottery funding to support the continuation of Pre-K in the first three schools and implementation in the three new schools for general education purposes. The schools were chosen based on a rubric established around identified needs throughout the county.

The school system applied for seven new sites for this upcoming school year but were only granted the three. DECAL made the final determination as to which sites were approved while also approving the continuation of Pre-K in the three sites from last school year.

The deadline to be considered for spaces in one of the three new classes is 3 p.m. on Friday, July 7. Office hours at the three schools are 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The registration packet can be found online at www.henry.k12 or in the front offices at any of the three schools. Once completed, packets and required documentation must then be delivered to the applicable school.
