Panola Mountain Activities

Special to The Times

Guided Mountain Hike will be on Saturday, June 24 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Have you ever wondered why Panola Mountain is a restricted area? Take a guided hike for a close look at their unique ecology and see how outcrop plants scrape out a living in this harsh environment. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water. Advanced register is required. The cost is $10 plus $5 parking.

ZZZ’s in the Trees: Canopy Camping will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 6 p.m. and again on Friday, September 15 at 6 p.m. Participants will experience a tranquil night in the canopy as they lay in “tree-boats,” viewing stars through shimmering branches. A treetop camp will be established in the park’s secluded climbing tree for an overnight experience. Participants should bring dinner, breakfast and a sleeping bag. Non-climbers are allowed to camp. Registration in advance is required as space is very limited. The cost is $90 plus $5 for parking.

Indoor Basic Archery will be held on Sunday, June 25, Saturday, July 8 and on Saturday, July 22 from 1-3 p.m. each day. Have you ever wanted to release your inner archer? Maybe you’re just looking for a place to hone your skills, no matter the weather. All equipment is provided and no experience is necessary. This class is for ages 9 and up and meets at the Nature Center, not at the archery range. Call the Nature Center in advance to register. The cost is $15 plus $5 parking.

4th of July Fireworks Hike will be held on Sunday, July 2 from 8-10:30 p.m. Slow down this July 4th and join a ranger for a leisurely stroll to the top of Panola Mountain. As the sun sets, enjoy a panoramic view of Stone Mountain and Atlanta’s Independence Day Celebrations from a distance. Bring water, bug spray, and a flashlight for the walk back down the mountain to a waiting campfire and s’mores. The cost is $20 plus $5 parking. For more information on these and any other programs at Panola call them at 770-389-7801.
