Veronica Stanley is hitting the target a lot these days.

The Stockbridge High School junior captured first place in the Navy division of the 2107 JROTC Air Rifle Service Championship, also known as Navy Nationals, last month in Anniston, Ala.

She qualified for the event with a postal match, meaning she shot on her home range and sent the targets in for qualification. She was the second-highest qualifier in the individual precision category.

After finishing the first day of the event in fourth place, she climbed to third the next day and won the title on the third and final day of competition. She is now entered in the JROTC National Championship with all service branch winners, scheduled for March 23-25 in Anniston.

A few days after the Navy Nationals she received an invitation to the Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colo., in April, according to her mother, Candice Stanley.

Amazingly, she has only been shooting for two years. All of her experience is related to competition, unlike many young shooters in Georgia who have grown up hunting. “She will not shoot an animal,” her mother said.

Veronica is captain of the rifle team at Stockbridge, and all members of the team are in the Navy JROTC at the school. She is hoping for a rifle scholarship to college, her mother said, citing several schools across the Southeast that have such program.

Although these national events have already taken place, the high school season for the Stockbridge team is not yet over. There are about 10 matches remaining, according to Veronica, and the team, currently ranked third in its area, will wrap up in late spring. “The season is year-round,” she said.
