Black History Month Open House

Special to The Times

The Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton County, Inc. will kick off Black History Month with an Open House on Sunday, February 5 from 2-4 p.m. at the Brown House. The Open House will feature Marcia (Lemon) Atkins, founder of Hope Family Ministries, a non-profit organization. Marcia has initiated “The Blacksville Community Project” to revitalize and preserve the Blacksville community in McDonough. She will host a roundtable discussion on a book she’s writing entitled “The Colored People of Henry County.” Speakers will share their knowledge and experiences about growing up in Henry County’s black communities in McDonough (Blacksville and Browntown), Stockbridge, Hampton, and Locust Grove.

The Open House is free and open to the public. Those in attendance are welcome to add their experiences. The intent is to gather additional information for the book, “The Colored People of Henry County.”

The Open House will be held at The Brown House, located at 71 Macon Street in McDonough.
