Chapter members fed more than 200 children, parents and deputies as part of the occasion. Six ladies, and one husband, took part in the event by serving food, pouring tea and lemonade and interacting with parents and kids in attendance.
Shop with A Deputy, which began in Henry County 19 years ago, was overseen by Sheriff’s Sgt. Jimmie Spence. Deputies also sold Christmas fruit and nuts throughout the festivities.
Area businesses regularly participate in the annual event by providing pizza, barbecue, chicken and hot dogs. Each deputy gave a bicycle to the child he or she accompanied on the shopping excursion, with some children also sporting new coats during the event.
In response to the deputies’ actions, some of the kids responded with a desire to use some of their shopping money to buy something for others in their families.
