Mary, Did You Know?
Brenda Nail DeLauder
Each year I like to take a Christmas carol and write about what it means to me. “Mary Did You Know?” had already been placed into my mind for this year when I heard it in a most amazing way, which really spoke to my heart. When tornadoes recently rolled through our state during a school day, it sent the kids into hallways to wait out the storm. A video came out of one of the public schools from that day, which was filled with glorious talent. Sitting in the hallway of their high school, the teens, of which I’m guessing were members of the school’s chorus, sang a wonderful rendition of this song. Listening to them filled me with joy because they sang with such gusto and warmth, adding their own special touches to it. Too often we see Christian faith removed from our schools, so this was a tremendous testimony for Christ indeed!
Mary did you know that your baby boy will some day walk on water?
Picture a young woman pregnant with a child she has been told is holy. To imagine the baby she will soon deliver is part of God, probably is more than she can fully comprehend. To think of Him as a grown man doing amazing feats would be out of the scope of what a human mind could hold.
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
A baby, soft and tender, who radiates love, will one day be the Saviour of the world. While no doubt Mary knew there would be great things to come from her child, the magnitude of what He truly would bring to this world, probably would not have entered her mind.
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new? This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.
Because of this precious child she has delivered, the people of the world will have a chance for eternal life. You can almost hear Mary gasp while the realization sinks into her mind.
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
After giving birth to the Son of God, awesome joy filled her. Think of Mary in the stable, looking around, seeing the various animals there. As part of all creation, every creature is rejoicing over this glorious birth of Jesus, who is Lord over all the earth!
Mary did you know that your baby boy would one day rule the nations?
Scripture tells us, “Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Yet to have known what He would do in His earthly lifetime probably could not have been visualized.
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb? This sleeping child you’re holding is the great I am.
As the mother of Jesus, Mary would have found this precious baby to be perfect. To truly understand this beautiful child she holds in her lap is the Saviour of our world, would only be possible if God opened her mind to take it in. Just to simply picture the epiphany she experienced, stills my heart. Adjectives such as wonderful, marvelous, amazing, or glorious really can’t do it justice. It is far beyond words of expression!
Even with all the busy of this season, we must find at least a few precious moments to joyfully celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. We are so greatly blessed to call Him, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Ever-lasting Father, Prince of Peace and the Great I Am. He is our Lord, who is so worthy of celebrating! Merry Christmas everyone!
