Moose Lodge hosting food drive Saturday

A local civic organization is working to make sure needy families in the community don’t go hungry during the holiday season.

Henry County Moose Lodge No. 2170, at 91 Hunter’s Chase in McDonough is collecting non-perishable food items to benefit the Helping in His Name Food Pantry in Stockbridge. The food drive will culminate Saturday with dinner and a show Saturday at 6 p.m.

Mike Harris is a past governor for the Moose Lodge, and has been on the board of directors for the organization off and on for last 30 years. He said the drive is designed to stock the shelves at the pantry with a focus on local families, as opposed to collecting food that is sent to other areas.

“All the food stays in Henry County,” said Harris. “We’ve done a couple food drives in the last couple years, but this is the first one where we have all the food staying in Henry County. I talked to a couple of other food drives before, and they ship the food all over the United States. We see the need here, and we want to keep the food here in Henry County. Let’s take care of our local people before we help people somewhere else.”

Harris said this local focus is one reason why the Moose Lodge chose Helping in His Name as the beneficiary of the drive.

“That was the first one that guaranteed me that the food we collected would stay in Henry County,” he said.

Entertainment for the event will be provided by Ladies Auxiliary of the Moose Lodge. Harris added that the local community has been receptive in past years, to Moose Lodge’s efforts to feed families in need.

He is hopeful that the trend will continue this year.

“Last time, we had about three 55-gallon barrels full,” said Harris. “We expect to have four or five barrels’ full this year.”
