Halloween’s getting started a few days early in Locust Grove, thanks to an annual celebration with a sweet side.

A Haunted Hayride and Trunk or Treat event is set for Oct. 28 at 5 p.m., at City Hall. Locust Grove Main Street Manager Anna Williams said the free event, an October tradition for the last several years, is typically a hit with the community, drawing several hundred people each year.

“We set it up with props and people in costume and that kind of stuff,” she said. “We have a lot of kids in costume. It’s huge. Some years, the line reaches from City Hall to the Kangaroo gas station. We have lots of businesses that participate and hand out information with their candy.”

Williams recalled some of the kids who showed up for last year’s Trunk or Treat festivities. Some of those costume, she said, ranged from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Darth Vader, and characters from Disney’s “Frozen.”

“I enjoy seeing the kids’ costumes, and we enjoy seeing the smiles on kids’ faces as they show off their costumes and collect their candy,” said Williams. “We’re very excited, and it’s going to be lots of fun.”

Pre-registration is not required for those who wish to take part in the event. Williams emphasized that vehicles must be lined up and decorated and ready for participants to give out candy by 4:45 p.m.
