MLK Celebration in Locust Grove

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the City of Locust Grove will be celebrating a chapter in local history. A portion of LG Griffin Road between Highway 42 and Tanger Boulevard will be renamed Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard as tribute to Shoal Creek Baptist Church’s historic connection to the King Family. Martin Luther King Sr. pastored at Shoal Creek Baptist Church from 1930 until 1932.

To celebrate the renaming, the City of Locust Grove and Shoal Creek Baptist Church will be hosting a reception and ceremony on Monday, January 18 at 2 p.m. The ceremony and reception will take place at Shoal Creek Baptist Church located at 99 LG Griffin Road, Locust Grove, and will include the unveiling of the new street name. The keynote address will be delivered by Reverend Markel Hutchins, civil and human rights leader and founder of Movement Forward Inc. Other speakers will include Eugene Edwards, President of the Henry County NAACP branch, and McDonough City Councilman Rufus Stewart. Dr. Geraldine Helton will sharing memories and remarks about Martin Luther King, Sr.’s time as pastor at Shoal Creek.

Rev. Michael Price of Shoal Creek Baptist Church stated that his church is “excited to be able to host this historical event, honoring Martin Luther King Sr.’s pastoring of this church.”
