Henry County School Board earns state award

Special to The Times

Henry County is now home to an Exemplary School Board as awarded by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) during their recent state conference in Atlanta.

This marks the highest honor any board of education in Georgia can receive based on GSBA’s recognition program. The recognition program was designed to showcase best practices in school governance and leadership. GSBA recognizes good school board governance to foster educational community cultures in order to advance student learning and achievement.

Henry County Schools’ Board of Education met and or exceeded the criteria set forth by GSBA to earn this honor of a 2015 Exemplary Board. The local board of education achieved the two other designations – quality and distinguished - in the past two years. Only 35 out of 180 school districts in Georgia can claim exemplary status.

“We have always believed our Board of Education to be one of the best in the state,” said Superintendent Rodney Bowler, “and this recent recognition further solidifies our thoughts. Henry County has a strong history of exceptional leaders on the Board and we are glad GSBA has a program to recognize such efforts locally and throughout Georgia.

“Pride, selfless service, and teamwork are hallmarks of Henry County Schools and the School Board, and we look forward to this continuing for years to come.”

The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education’s standards for effective governance to recognize exemplary leadership. In 1998, the Georgia School Boards Association was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.

The GSBA Board recognition program is a three-year, three-tiered program. For more information on the program, you may visit the GSBA website at www.gsba.com for awards and recognition and to view the criteria for all tiers of the program.
