This holiday season marks a time of celebration for the Henry County Community Senior Choir.

The group will present its first-ever Christmas Musical Dec. 6 at 3 p.m., at Shiloh Baptist Church, 262 Macon St., in McDonough.

Choir Director Shawn McClain says the concert will enable the choir to “give a little more to the community.”

“We’re going to do something different this year,” says McClain. “Ever since we started in 2013, we’ve done a fall concert, but this year we’re changing up a bit by doing a Christmas concert. It’s going to be a full-fledged musical. We’ll render about seven or eight songs. There’s going to be a narration before each selection.”

The choir, in its third year, includes approximately 90 members, ranging from 30-90 years old. One of those members, Locust Grove resident Avis Grier, joined the choir shortly after the group formed three years ago.

Grier says she enjoys performing with others in the choir, which encompasses members of numerous churches in the area.

“For me, I love to sing,” says Grier. “I enjoy the camaraderie of the group, and how we come together. It’s like an inspiration to have all the churches working together. We can just feel the spirit of the songs we sing, and it’s really beautiful.”

The concert will also feature interpretive dance performances by the God’s Creation group from Philadelphia Baptist Church in Hampton. McClain adds that the event will also provide an opportunity to help others in need during the holiday season.

“We’re asking the community to bring non-perishable items, because we’re doing an actual food drive and we’ll donate to various food pantries,” he says.

The choir rehearses on the third Saturday of the month at 12:30 p.m., at Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Locust Grove. For more information, call Shawn McClain at 770-875-5615.
