John Marvin Helton, Sr.
John Marvin Helton Sr., age 94, of Jonesboro, passed away Monday, October 26, 2015.
He is survived by wife Louise Helton of 69 years; children, Sheila Brussel and John, John M. Helton Jr. and Sandra, Chris Helton and Linda, Deborah Helton, Stephanie Norton and Joe; 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Helen Copeland and several nieces and nephews.

Ruth M. Hargraves
Mrs. Ruth M. Hargraves, age 76, of Hampton, Ga., passed away October 25, 2015. Mrs. Hargraves was born in Wilkes- Barre, Pa., the daughter of the late Helen Buksar Matelski and Joseph Matelski. Mrs. Hargraves enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, gardening and making flower arrangements. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Jane Lewis.
Survivors are her loving husband of 58 years, Dr. Fred L. Hargraves of Hampton; daughter, Dr. Denise H. Hargraves of Griffin; son, Tommy Hargraves of Hampton; grandson, Rich Lamar Newman of Hampton; brother, Thomas Joseph Matel-ski of High Falls.

Tim M. Carter
Mr. Tim M. Carter, age 51 of McDonough, Ga., passed away October 3, 2015. He was born in Griffin to Emily Ruth Martin Carter and the late Robert Lee Carter. Tim attended Liberty Hill Baptist Church and operated Carter Disposal for 15 years. He enjoyed watching TV and playing games on his phone.
Survivors include his wife, Denise Simpson Carter; children, Robert and Samantha Carter; mother, Ruth Carter; siblings, Randall (Debbie) Carter, Elaine Brown, Barry Carter, Carol(Louie) Rice, Joel (Lynn) Carter; numerous nieces and nephews.

Genia Gretchen Jarrett
Mrs. Genia Gretchen Jarrett, age 48, of McDonough, Ga., passed away October 30, 2015. Genia was born in Pensacola, Fla. as her father was serving in the US Navy. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, photography, being a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. Genia was known for being organized and meticulous. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Helen Renolds, Jack and Agnes Hughes, and Doris Jarrett and a stepsister, Stacy Syms.
Survivors are her loving husband of 27 years, Ron Jarrett of McDonough; children, Kayla Jarrett of Forest Park, Lexie Jarrett of McDonough, Austin Jarrett of McDonough, Brittany Cabello (Chris) of Morrow and Ricky Lloyd of Fayetteville; mother, Jackie Kidd of Dallas, Ga.; father and stepmother, Doyle and Betty Renolds of Jackson; siblings, Melissa Gilmore (Dan) of Stafford, Va., Jack Renolds of Chaparral, N.M., Ricky Kidd (Nicole) of Douglasville; stepbrother, Brett Whitman (Becky) of Memphis, Tenn., and stepsisterKelly Romine (T. J.) of Fayetteville; stepmother, Daphne Renolds; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Shane “Fat Rednek” Hill, age 41, of Stockbridge, Ga., died Saturday, October 31, 2015. He was born in Atlanta, Ga., to Thomas Jackson and Judy Collins Hill.
In addition to his parents, Shane is survived by his children, Austin Hill, McDonough, Ga., and Alexis Hill, McDonough, Ga.; his brothers, Steve (Alisha) Hill, Jackson, Ga., and Jimmy (Jessica) Hill, Locust Grove, Ga.; plus many beloved friends, nieces, nephews, and loved ones. Shane had many friends that included his Racetrack Metter family and his Swan Pond fishing and horseshoe family. He was loved and will be missed forever.

Al Jackson Smith, Jr.
Al Jackson Smith, Jr., of Locust Grove, Ga., passed away Friday, October 30, 2015. He was born in Meridian, Mississippi the son of the late Al Jackson Smith Sr., and Katherine Felker Smith. Mr. Smith earned a B. S. in Civil engineering from Mississippi State University, a M.S. in Environmental engineering from Vanderbilt University, a J.D. of Law from the Atlanta Law School, and a Master of Laws from the Woodrow Wilson College of Law. Al began his career as a Civil Engineer with the Mississippi State Highway Department. Later, he became the Director of the EPA, Region IV, Superfund Program, where he served on the Congressional Committee work group developing statues and amendments for the Superfund program. During this time Mr. Smith was named an EPA national expert. After authoring the nation’s first college level text book on hazardous substance response, Managing Hazardous Substance Accidents, by McGraw Hill, Mr. Smith became the Deputy Director of the EPA’s Region IV Water Management Division; he began teaching environmental seminar courses at Vanderbilt University, the University of Arkansas, Georgia Tech and the University of Alabama. Al was certified as a Professional Engineer in South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, New York, Michigan and Ohio. After retiring from the EPA, Mr. Smith became Of Counsel for the Atlanta law firm of Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd and Cadenhead, eventually becoming the head of its environmental practice and later, serving Of Counsel for the Atlanta law firm of McRae, Secrest, and Fox. He continued to work privately with several distinguished Atlanta firms. Mr. Smith became the City Solicitor of Stockbridge in 1984, served as a municipal judge for the city of Locust Grove in 1988, while managing a pro bono law practice that served the local community. Al began his final endeavor as an Environmental Regulatory Consultant, in private practice working in litigation support, case advisement, and as a national expert witness. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Smith authored over 70 category I & II publications, 40 technical writings, was the recipient of the EPA’s Gold Medal for Exceptional Service, the recipient of EPA’s Bronze Medal for Distinguished Service, the recipient of EPA’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Career, named in Who’s Who in American Science and engineering, named to the Board of Directors of Kiber engineering, appointed to the Henry County Juvenile Court Citizens Review Panel, and listed in “2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century” by the International Biographical Center in Cam-bridge, England. Mr. Smith also served on the Henry County Water Authority Board from 2005 – 2012. He was preceded in death by a sister, Charlene Smith Knight.
Al Smith, Jr., is survived by Patricia Scruggs Smith of Locust Grove, Ga.; a son, Johnny Smith and his wife, Judy of Covington, Ga.; daughter, Vicki Williams and her husband, Steve of Roswell, Ga., and a daughter, Kathy Brinkley and her husband, Keith of Locust Grove, Ga.; grandchildren, Taylor and Maggie Smith, Patricia and C. J. Williams, Matthew and Alli Brinkley; his brother, Dave Smith of Terry, Miss.; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 from 1 until 3 p.m. A graveside service will follow at the Locust Grove Cemetery at 3:30 p.m. with Warren Holder officiating.
