A series of meetings bringing together several facets of McDonough’s downtown leadership is scheduled for Thursday and Saturday.

McDonough’s Downtown Development Authority is hosting the McDonough Downtown Summit beginning with a presentation Thursday from 6-8 p.m. A workshop will take place Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Both events will be at the Hood Street Art Center, 136 Hood Street.

Thursday’s “Visions and Expectations of Downtown Partners” presentation will include participation from most if not all of the following groups: City Council; city department heads; Board of Zoning Appeals; Greater McDonough Merchants Asso-ciation; Historic Preservation Commission; Planning Commis- sion; Main Street McDonough; McDonough Arts Council; McDonough Hospitality & Tourism Board; and downtown property owners.

Each group is invited to make a short presentation about its organization’s history, mission, accomplishments, goals, funding and other details.

Bob Trescott, the city’s business development director, said perhaps the biggest goal of the event is to start “collaboration and communication” by letting each of these groups know what all of the other groups do. Trescott said this week’s activities are not an end in themselves but a beginning.

“At first it seemed like an event, but it is really more of a process,” Trescott said of his directive from the City Council for the summit. “By getting together we might be able to access resources that haven’t been accessed before and avoid duplication or stepping on each other’s toes.”

Based on what is identified in Thursday’s presentations, the participants will break into various groups for Saturday’s workshop and talk about how to move forward.

Trescott sees the likelihood of a few meetings like this to give the City Council information for deciding in which direction to take the downtown area.

Anyone who wishes to attend the Downtown Summit is invited to RSVP at City Hall by contacting Trescott at 678-782-6267 or rtrescott@mcdonoughga.org.
