Luella-Union Grove game set for Turner Field

Two local baseball programs are getting a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play on the biggest stage in the Southeast.
The Union Grove Wolverines and Luella Lions are scheduled to square off Friday, April 17, at 7 p.m. at Turner Field, home of the Atlanta Braves.
Union Grove head coach Allen Franklin said that his team is excited not only about the opportunity to play at Turner Field, but that its opponent will be another county school.
“Luella has a great tradition of baseball over the years between Coach Cooper and now with Coach Harris,” said Franklin. “This is a memory that all of our guys will be able to take with them for the rest of their lives. They will always be able to say that they got to play in a major league stadium.”
Franklin added that the night-game atmosphere will be another key element.
“Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year, and we will be able to actually play the game,” he said. “Being able to play the 7:00 game and get to play under the lights is going to add to the experience for everyone.
“It would be great if not only Union Grove and Luella communities came out to support the boys, but all of Henry County came out to the game.”
As of March 26 the Wolverines were 11-1 overall and 4-0 in Region 4-AAAAA.
All 10 of the seniors on the Union Grove squad are moving on after this season to continue as college athletes, according to athletic director Nick Ellis.
Tickets for the game are available at either school.
An $8 ticket also is good for admission to one of four future Atlanta Braves games against the Washington Nationals (April 27), San Diego Padres (June 8 or 10) or defending world champion San Francisco Giants (Aug. 4).
