Piedmont Henry offers expanded Cancer Wellness programs

Submitted

Piedmont Henry Hospital has expanded its Thomas F. Chap-man Family Cancer Wellness programs and will now be offering yoga, strength training and drumming. These classes will go along with the cooking demonstrations and support group classes that were already taking place at Piedmont Henry.

In the yoga classes, participants will be able to calm their mind, body and emotions with deep relaxation and simple yoga postures.  These classes will be held every Thursday in July and August at 5:30 p.m., and will meet in the Piedmont Henry Employee Fitness Center.

Strength Training for Survivors is a class that will work participants’ core. It will be held Thursday afternoons in July and August at 1 p.m. and will meet in the Piedmont Henry Employee Fitness Center.

One Hour Drummer classes will teach participants to play drums and other rhythm instruments. This energetic activity will help decrease stress levels, boost immune systems and promote overall well-being. No musical experience is required and the drums are provided. This class will meet certain Wednesdays in July and August at either 12:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. Call 770-719-5860 for exact class dates.

Cooking demonstrations were already a part of the Piedmont Henry cancer wellness program.  This summer, a Summer Sizzle class will be offered on July 30 at noon.   In this class, the cancer wellness dietician will give information on how to get the most out of summer foods.  On August 27 at noon, a class called Purple Cancer Eaters will be offered.  This class will show off some purple fruits and vegetables that are potent cancer fighters.  Cooking demonstrations will be held in the Piedmont Henry Foundation Education Center in the Foundation Board room.

Piedmont Henry will also continue to offer support groups.  The Look Good… Feel Better group teaches beauty techniques to women who are undergoing cancer treatment.  This group will meet July 15 at 10 a.m. and August 19 at 10 a.m. Sisters By Choice works to establish a network of support that provides resources and counsel to individuals with breast cancer and their families.  This class will meet August 12 at 7:30 p.m.

Cancer Wellness classes are now offered online.  They are free for cancer patients and perfect for patients who travel for work, don’t feel well enough to leave home or may live far away from Piedmont Henry. Man-aging Your Stress For Optimal Wellness will be offered online July 21 at 6 p.m. and July 30 at 1 p.m. Soar In The Summer will be offered Thursdays from August 14 to 28 at noon.

Class times and location are subject to change. To view the full class schedule and sign up for a class, visit piedmont.org/cancerwellness or call 770-719-5860.

Programs and services provided by Cancer Wellness at Piedmont Henry are free of charge to cancer patients, survivors and caregivers, thanks to the generosity of former Equifax Chairman and CEO Thomas (Tom) F. Chapman and family.
