By Kathy Pillatzki
Assistant Director
Henry County Library System

Happy New Year from Henry County Public Library System! We’ve had a busy year. Anyone who thinks libraries have become dinosaurs in the electronic age should drop by some time. It’s not unusual for us to unlock the door at opening time and see a line of 20-30 people waiting to come in. Nearly all of our statistical measures are growing: library visits are up, circulation and computer use are up, and program attendance is up.

As we reflect on another year of service to the public, we’re reminded that we can’t do it alone. Strategic partnerships with other local agencies have allowed us to provide exceptional community service even during lean economic times. The staff and trustees of HCLS wish to thank these partners for supporting our efforts in 2013:

The Henry County Board of Commissioners for providing funding for staff, utilities, and other support services.

Henry County Board of Education, for supplemental funding for materials to support the public school curriculum.

Henry County Development Authority, for helping fund the purchase of the BusinessWise database and additional materials to support small businesses.

Henry County Arts Alliance for assistance with our 10th annual fall festival, Ghosts and Ghouls of Henry County.

Our countless volunteers who have done everything from presenting programs to shelving books to scrubbing bathrooms so we could keep the doors open.

The many businesses and individuals who provided donations to support our summer reading programs and to purchase materials not covered by our regular budget.

The Friends of Henry County Libraries, Inc. for fundraising and financial support for programs and materials above and beyond what we could provide from our regular funding.

Georgia Public Library Service for support services including extensive staff training and resources.

No list of “thank you’s” would be complete without the Henry County Times. Mickie and her staff are among our very best library advocates, and we thank them for helping us provide the Library Times to publicize our summer reading programs, and for devoting precious space for library news and for this column each week.

In addition to all of the services we offer, the library system has been a partner to help other groups meet the needs of Henry County residents. Our staff has provided support services to Henry County Parks and Recreation, Adult Education, Connecting Henry, and the Ferst Foundation of Henry County, as well as numerous schools and daycares. We will soon be announcing a cooperative venture with Helping in His Name food pantry to provide employment resources to their clients.

Finally, we thank our patrons for your support and encouragement, and for taking advantage of one of the best values around. Remember, libraries are not amenities. They are a public service that provides public value. For every dollar invested in public libraries, seven dollars in services are returned to the community. Thank you for making full use of this exceptional resource and for championing our importance in your community.
