Henry County’s Cooking
with The Georgia state Fair

  If people love your pecan pie, peach cobbler or cookies, then you could be the Georgia State Fair’s Best Baker! You have the opportunity to enter their contest this year when the fair comes to Atlanta Motor Speedway Oct. 25 through Nov. 3.

  The baking contest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 10 a.m. to noon. The pecan pie and peach cobbler exhibitors must be 19 or older; cookie exhibitors have two age groups, 5 to 12 and 13 to 18. There is no registration fee; just bake your items and bring them to the “Are You Crafty’ tent at the fair. You must bring your typed recipe with each entry. Judging will be at 12:30 p.m. Both the pecan pie and peach cobbler winner will be awarded $100 and the winners in each age group of the cookie contest will receive $50.

Pecan Pie

1 (9 inch) unbaked pie crust
3 eggs, beaten
1 cup dark corn syrup
1 cup white sugar
1/4 cup melted butter
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 cup pecan halves 

  Preheat oven to 350 degreesº. Beat together the eggs, corn syrup, sugar, butter and vanilla.

Arrange pecans in bottom of pie crust and pour mixture over.

  Bake for 1 hour or until knife inserted 1 inch from edge comes out clean. Allow to cool before slicing.
