Edna Walls, 88, died July 19, 2013 after a brief illness. Mrs. Walls was a native of Seneca, South Carolina, but was a long time resident of Hampton, GA. It was in Hampton that she built her life and family as a member of the Greatest Generation. Mrs. Walls came to Atlanta in 1945 after attending Lander College in South Carolina. In Atlanta she worked for Southern Railway, a once robust and thriving transportation king. Like so many young women of her generation, she lived in a boarding house and it was there that she met her future husband, the late Grover A. Walls, Sr. Together they left the city and moved to rural Hampton to pursue Mr. Walls’ dream of establishing a family farm. Their entrepreneurial spirit led them to build not only a successful farming enterprise, but also many other business interests that were well known and respected in the community. It was also there that they started and raised their family of five children, undoubtedly the proudest achievement of her life. Mrs. Walls was very active in Hampton First Baptist Church, where in 2011 she was awarded the longest active member of the church, with over 65 years’ of service and attendance. This was one of the greatest honors of her life, as her faith was very central to her character. Today as we watch the members of this Great Generation leave us, we should always be reminded of the lessons they taught us about perseverance, patience and honor. Mrs. Walls was predeceased by her husband, Grover A. Walls, Sr. and five brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her children, Grover A. Walls, Jr. (Jackie) of Woodstock, Steve Walls of Woodland, Betty Walls Crook of Hampton, Sue Walls Wilson of Hampton, Cathy Walls (Steve Anthony) of Atlanta, grandchildren Jim Wilson (Melissa) of Hampton, Libby Whittemore (Dewayne) of Locust Grove, Billy Walls of Griffin, and Zachary Harrison of Hampton, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
