Annabelle Gibson Berwald
Annabelle Gibson Berwald, 87, of McDonough, GA, born July 27, 1925, died June 24, 2013, wife to Raymond Berwald for 65 years. Mother to Sandy McGarity (Arch McGarity), Barbara Berwald, and Lawrence Berwald, sister to Robert Gibson (Marylyn) and Penny Buckley (Buck), with three grandchildren, one newborn great-grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. Annabelle grew up in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania with her younger brother and sister and devoted parents Jesse Lynn and Robert Gibson. She followed in her mother’s footsteps as a student and eventual teacher of the piano, receiving the Bachelor of Arts degree in music in 1947. At music school, she met her future husband Raymond, who had returned from serving in the US Army Air Corps overseas and was also studying music. They married and bore three children; Ray worked as a school teacher, and Annabelle cared for their young family. Music was always around, and even while the children were young, Annabelle played piano and organ in churches in Florida, often in partnership with Ray directing choirs. She also helped supplement family income by teaching privately. In Sarasota, Florida, her talents were held in high regard, as she also was a founding member of a locally acclaimed piano quartet. Always industrious, Annabelle took a sales position with a hearing aid company. This led to her and Ray becoming owners of a franchise in that business, which proved very successful. After her children were grown, Annabelle partnered in a local retail bridal shop called Jannabelles, allowing her to express her creativity in new ways. Eventually she and Ray retired to the mountains of North Carolina for a few years and finally moved to McDonough about ten years ago to be nearer daughter Sandy McGarity. Annabelle continued to play the piano in these later years, and was gifted a beautiful baby grand piano by her husband. Annabelle was a member of Wesley Way United Methodist Church. She will be sorely missed by family and friends.
