Last Week’s Photo
Thanks to Joy East who submitted this photo of an ashtray that belonged to her father Carlton Morris of Stockbridge. Gene Crumbley called in to tell us that this came from the Gulf Gas Distributors in McDonough. According to Gene his Uncle Bernice Crumbley and Mrs. Gertrude Turner were the owners from 1948-1953. Gulf Gas supplied oil products, gas and kerosene to local service stations. Bob Upchurch wrote, “this is an ash tray given by the Gulf Oil distributorship owned by Zed Turner and Sheep Crumbley. Later it was owned by Zed’s widow, Gertrude who taught at McDonough High School. She later married Charles Coan and afterwards it became Coan and Ford. The principal drivers were Levi Ford and JW Upchurch, my father.” Jim Joiner said, “Bernice Crumbley and Mr. Turner were the owners during the mid 1950’s. The Gulf Gas Distributors was located on Griffin Street, the first business after crossing the train tracks on Hwy. 42. They delivered to farmers, service stations and other fuel dealers. The business was sold to Mr. Coan in later years. At the time they delivered in a 1955-56 C-60 Chevrolet truck. They supplied the gas to the Phillips 66 station that was located on the corner of the McDonough Square. This station was owned, at that time, by MJ Upchurch and Zack Hinton.”
